“Joy of Life” After Matisse, by Terry Hastings

Terry Hastings doesn’t just reinterpret Matisse—he reclaims him. Joy of Life is a queer reimagining of the pastoral ideal, where the bodies are bolder, the colors louder, and the joy unmistakably communal. This isn’t a quiet meadow of reclining nudes; it’s a queer utopia in full bloom.

The figures—rendered in unapologetic hues—aren’t just lounging. They’re living. They play music, stretch, flirt, commune. There’s movement in every limb, rhythm in every pose. Hastings trades Matisse’s classical serenity for something more electric: a park scene that feels like a queer family reunion, a pride picnic, a mythic gathering where everyone’s invited and no one’s performing normalcy.

The trees and sky pulse with color, like nature itself is in on the celebration. And the composition? It’s theatrical. Hastings stages the scene like a ritual of belonging, where joy isn’t just aesthetic—it’s political, personal, and sacred.

This is Matisse with a wink and a remix. It’s queer futurism in a field of dreams. It’s the kind of art that makes you want to dance barefoot and call your chosen family.
