🖋️ Art Review: “Chill”
By Renata Feldspar, Senior Critic at The Desert Register
Terry Hastings has composed a visual fugue of floating bodies and quiet communion. This is not a bacchanal—it’s a balm. The figures, rendered in bright, stylized hues, do not clamor for attention. They recline, drift, and converse in tones that suggest sunscreen, not scandal. The “Critics Circle” is present, yes—but they are grounded, poolside, and perhaps a little tipsy on LaCroix.
There is no leather here, only leisure. No hooligans, only humans in repose. Hastings has distilled the Palm Springs ethos into a single, shimmering tableau: chill as canon. The pool becomes a stage not for drama, but for ambient intimacy. A place where memory floats, unbothered by narrative urgency.
In short: this is a masterpiece of restraint. A visual siesta. A love letter to the art of doing absolutely nothing, beautifully.
Each person in this image started as a photo taken by Terry, who then, inspired by Henri Matisse's Cut Outs, cut them out with photoshop and then scratched in important details like nipples and genitals. Terry then digitally created this Palm Springs world for them to party in.
