Palm Springs
Palm Springs: A Manual for Gentle Rule-Breakers
Step one: ignore the signs. Step two: pack a bold swimsuit and a suspicious amount of irony. In Palm Springs, Terry Hastings turns civic order into set dressing and municipal modernism into a sunlit stage for soft rebellion. Pools are swum in (whether they’re real or not), pyramids sprout plants like secrets, and banks become runways for the fabulously defiant. It’s a visual uprising in SPF 50—where cardboard palm trees sway in imagined breezes, and the only thing more consistent than the gridlines is the artist’s refusal to play by them. Welcome to the mirage—wish you were here.
These modern digital works center on the human form, beginning with photographs of my models. I cut them out in Photoshop, apply solid vibrant colors, and add details like nipples and genitals. Then, I design a contemporary minimalist digital world for them to inhabit. You can explore more of my earlier work in the "Cut Outs" section!
