“Okay folks, now this one here—this is from Terry Hastings’ early Midwest Memory series. You’ll notice it’s a little louder in color than what he’s doing nowadays. That sky’s just about electric, and the field could wake a sleeping cow. He was still working through those desert tones back then—South Palm Springs meets South Dakota, I suppose.

But don’t let the vibrancy fool you. Look at that horizon line. Dead straight, like a gravel road heading out of town. That’s Terry setting the stage. It’s simple, sure, but there’s tension. Geometry and feeling, side by side.

I like to tell my students that color talks, but shape whispers. And in these early pieces, Hastings was still letting color do the storytelling—big voice, big feelings. Later on, he gets quieter, more thoughtful. But you can already see it starting here. That white line? That’s not just sunrise—it’s restraint sneaking in.

Anyway, if you’ve got questions, come find me by the cookie table. I’ll be the one hogging the scotcheroos.
