“Memory in Still Water” – According to Belle Plaine Museum of Modern Art's Superintendent Vinkle "Listen, we’ve got prints of Hopper’s Gas Station at Dusk and Grant Wood’s Young Corn in the conference room. Had to laminate them to keep the humidity from curling the corners. Cost-effective. Inspirational. Easy to wipe down.

Now this Hastings piece—well, that’s a real original. Museum-quality, they say. It’s moody. Blue. Sparse. Some kind of lake story. Our art teacher gets emotional about it every time the field trip comes around. Says the stillness is “active.” I don’t know what that means.

Kids seem to like it. They whisper about the tree like it’s haunted. Parents ask why the water’s not wavy. I say it’s modern. They nod.

Truth be told, I prefer the Hopper—gas pumps feel more American. But we couldn’t swing the real one. This Hastings guy, though, he’s got some buzz. The Belle Plaine Museum of Modern Art showcases it like it’s the Mona Lisa of the Midwest. Can’t argue with regional acclaim.

I guess it grows on you. Like mold. Or memory.”
