Uncle Gordon always started with coffee. Not the fancy kind—just Folgers boiled on the stove until it could strip paint. Two sugars, no nonsense. He’d light his Pall Mall before the mug hit the counter, eyes already scanning the horizon like a general preparing for war.
“See that pink?” he’d say, stabbing a finger toward the eastern sky. “That’s fish light. They bite harder when the sky blushes first.”
We were going to the tree, of course—the one on the far side of Big Lake. That was his spot. Not the dock. Not the shallows. The tree. You had to row straight and quiet, or you’d lose the mood.
“Gotta beat Herb,” Gordon muttered, dragging on the cigarette like it owed him money. “He talks too much. Fish don’t like opinions.”
Herb always arrived with a loud "Mornin!" and even louder stories. Gordon swore the fish scattered the second Herb started in on his gallbladder or high school wrestling glory. “Fish got ears,” he said. “They hear the drama and they swim for peace.”
I didn’t argue. I just packed the thermos and rowed where he pointed, watching morning slide across the lake in stripes—pink, peach, a sliver of gold. Gordon leaned back, smoke trailing off into the hush.
“Quiet now,” he whispered. “Let the lake forget we’re here.”
