“Outpost,” as told by Clarence, school bus driver, Route 7A
We were headed up to Fort Snelling, right past the airport—one of those field trip days where the kids are half asleep and the teachers are trying to keep order with granola bars and laminated maps. I was driving the old Bluebird, the one with the sticky third gear and the heater that only worked on the left side. Anyway, we’re pulling off the highway, and I see it—this crooked wooden signpost off to the side, just standing there like it had something to say but forgot how.
Two arms pointing in opposite directions, no text I could make out. I was so far in the back of the moment, I had no one to ask. No ranger, no historian, just me and the hum of the engine. I kept thinking: maybe it was the first “Keep Out! This is Mine” sign. Like some settler drove it into the ground and said, ‘This here’s mine, and don’t ask again.’ But the way it leaned, the way the light hit it—red at the bottom, yellow at the top—it felt more like a grave marker. Not for a person, maybe, but for a moment. A claim that didn’t hold. A direction that didn’t last.
I didn’t stop. I couldn’t. But I’ve thought about it since. That post wasn’t giving directions—it was remembering something. Or maybe warning us. Hard to say. But it’s stuck with me. Like a whisper from the edge of the field.
