“Still Employed,” as described by Geri Langsweirdt, Lunch Lady Emeritus (but don’t call her that)

You see that thing out there? That tall, lonely silo-looking contraption standing like it’s waiting for a bus that’ll never come? That’s me. That’s what it feels like. Still employed. Still standing. Still steaming vegetables no one eats.

They keep asking when I’m gonna retire. I tell ’em, “When the last tray’s washed and the last mystery meat’s served.” But truth is, I like the racket. I like the clatter. I like knowing the pipes still run hot and the kids still complain. That structure—dead center in a field of nothing, with its weird little black rectangles like a barcode for purgatory—that’s my vibe. Functional. Unapologetic. Slightly radioactive.

I’ve been here since before they paved the parking lot. I’ve seen principals come and go, each one thinking they invented discipline. I’ve served lunch through budget cuts, fire drills, and one very unfortunate chili incident. And I’m still here. Like that outpost. Not pretty. Not poetic. But necessary.

So yeah, I’m still employed. And if you want to know what resilience looks like, don’t point to some inspirational poster. Point to the industrial ghost in the middle of the green-yellow nowhere. That’s me. Lunch Lady Geri. Still steaming. Still scheming. Still here.
