"Of all my nieces and nephews, that Terry is the artistic one. He gets it from me, you know. I once painted the propane tank with a sunset on the lake—mine had loons in it, of course. I love the loons when they visit, with those lonely little calls that echo just right in the evening. And I added some happy little trees too. I guess I watched too much Bob Ross back then, squinting at the TV and painting like I had a squirrel named Peapod helping me mix colors.
Then here comes Terry, Mr. Minimalism, painting it all cleaner, simpler. No loons, no trees—just the end of day, quiet and distilled. His sunset wraps the cabin in hush, like it’s remembering something. It almost looks like he painted it on wood. I painted loons on wood once myself, but I used the wrong paint. It’s all cracked now.
Still, this one’s lovely. It’s that soft kind of light—the kind that doesn’t argue. Just a bit of peach, a little lemon, blue creeping in if you’re patient.
I painted the rocks in the garden too, each one a mood I couldn’t name. And I always said, art should surprise you—even if it's holding propane."
