"Are we there yet?" my sister Chandra piped up for the fifth time, kicking the back of the seat with all the conviction an 8-year-old could muster. "We’re exactly one hour away," I replied. "You said that an hour ago!" This time, I meant it. I pointed out the solitary tree in the field—the one we always passed right before Jamestown. Surrounded by rows of green grass and framed by the bluest sky the Dakotas could conjure, it had become my trusty travel companion. A sentinel on our way to memory.
Chandra leaned forward, bouncing with anticipation. "I can’t wait to get to Gramma and Grampa’s house and play with Trina and Teia and Shaun and Kelly. We can slide down the stairs and jump on the bed!"
Mom turned in her seat, her voice full of calm warning. "No jumping on the bed. Remember last time—you fell off and bumped your head."
Undeterred, Chandra grinned. "Do we get to see the Big Buffalo again?"
