Growing up in Minnesota, swimming in a motel pool was something that happened on vacation, not at home. After a long day of fighting with your sister in the backseat, roadside signs advertised what used to be luxuries that separated one motel from the next: AIR CONDITIONING, FREE TV, even ICE MACHINE.

Part of the Vacationland USA series, Free TV revisits the promises of mid-century American travel through the language of neon signage and nostalgia. Once a genuine attraction, free television now feels almost quaint in an era when entertainment streams endlessly from the devices we carry in our pockets.
