Review by Jules Ramirez Queer Arts Writer, Lifelong Dinah Devotee, Poolside Philosopher

“Ladies Day Pool Party” By Terry Hastings

There are pool parties, and then there’s Ladies Day. Terry Hastings captures the electric joy of Dinah Shore Weekend with a piece that feels less like a snapshot and more like a memory in motion. Ladies Day Pool Party is a celebration of queer femme energy—sun-drenched, music-filled, and unapologetically vibrant.

The figures, rendered in bold, saturated colors, dance, swim, flirt, and play instruments around a circular pool that feels like the center of a ritual. The building behind them—mid-century modern, of course—anchors the scene in Palm Springs realness. Orange chairs and fruit-bearing trees add a touch of domestic surrealism, like someone’s backyard got blessed by Dionysus and a DJ.

What makes this piece sing is its rhythm. You can feel the splash, the bass line, the laughter. Hastings doesn’t just depict a party—he stages a rite of joy, a communal release, a moment where queer women take up space, take over the pool, and take back the weekend.

It’s Dinah distilled. It’s femme mythology. It’s a damn good reason to hang art in your hallway and say, “Yes, I was there. Or I should have been.”

This stunning photo/graphic is a masterpiece created by renowned photographer Terry Hastings. Inspired by the cut outs of Henri Matisse, Terry starts with photosgraphs of his models in action, cuts them out in photoshop, turns them a solid color and scratches in a few key details.  The piece is playful and fun, with many outlets to explore.
